CFD Modelling of Membrane Separation Processes

Our research group develops a CFD solver for the OpenFOAM framework dealing with the selective mass transfer through membranes. Using this solver, the flow and concentration fields within membrane modules can be predicted in order to optimize the modules. The solver can be utilized for gas permeation as well as for liquid separation techniques.

The goal of this thesis is to select and implement recent membrane transport models into OpenFOAM after an extensive literature review. For validation purposes experimentally observed phenomena have to be calculated: Concentration polarization, effects of temperature and/or viscosity of the fluids and so on

Prerequisites: knowledge in C++ programming, completed CFD-Exercise 166.050 (or comparable), English preferred, team work is possible.
Award on successful completion possible.
